We’re delighted you’re thinking of baptism for your child. Your child is precious to you and precious to God. At baptism you promise to raise your child to know that God loves them, and to help them to follow Jesus as a member of the Church.
For your child, baptism marks the start of a journey of faith, which involves turning away from evil, turning towards Christ and becoming a member of the local and worldwide Christian family.
At St George's, Baptisms usually take place at a special baptism service at 12 noon after the Sunday Service. However, if you prefer, the baptism service can also take place during the Sunday Service starting at 10.00am.
During the baptism three things happen. First, the new Christian receives the sign of the cross using anointing oil to show they are now a member of the church. Second, they are splashed with water to show that God is willing to wash away everything that may go wrong in their lives if they turn to him. Third, they are given a lit candle as a symbol of carrying Jesus's light into the World. We believe that in Baptism new Christians receive God’s Holy Spirit to strengthen their future lives.
If you would like to arrange a Baptism, please contact the Vicar or Emma, our Baptism Coordinator, using the email below. They will arrange a convenient time to visit you at home. During the visit they will talk about the service, the promises you make and to introduce you to the work that we do at St George's to support children and their parents in their journey of faith.
We know that, for some parents, the Baptism of your child is the first contact you have had with the Church possibly for many years. We look forward to welcoming you into a friendly, open, relaxed church where you can learn more about faith and worship the God who loves you and your children.
